I used to wake up every day dreading human interaction. My stutter was as predictable as the sunrise.
And there were only 3 responses I got from people who noticed my stutter:
They’d either make fun of my stutter to my face…
Make fun of me behind my back…
Or they’d pity me and say “Oh don’t worry Isaac – it’s OK!”
But it’s not “OK.”
It never was. It never will be.
If I wasn’t actively stuttering, I was thinking about my next stutter.
It was the anxiety that wrecked me.
As I grew into an adult, I quickly became a shut-in, sacrificing a colourful, full life because I didn’t want to humiliate myself.
Alone in the dark most nights, peering at screens, trying to mindlessly entertain myself enough so the embarrassment and regret didn’t leak through.
I was taught to build my confidence. I’d go into conversations and be convinced that “this time I won’t stutter!” …. but then I always did.
The exercises from therapists, pathologists and speech coaches didn’t work.
None of THEM actually had a stutter. They didn’t know what it was like. So how could they possibly treat it?
It was like taking swimming lessons from someone who didn’t know how to swim.
Tennis lessons from someone who never held a tennis racket.
Even after professional help, I still stuttered when teachers called on me.
I stuttered around even my family and closest friends.
I stuttered when ordering at restaurants. (In fact, I often chose certain menu items because they were less likely to make me stutter!)
Stuttering was like a thick, black blanket that laid across every aspect of my life.
